Why does Neumont require a specific laptop make/model?
Requiring a specific make and model of laptop has a few key advantages. First, it helps Neumont support your hardware quickly and efficiently. We handle all standard warranty service on-campus at no extra cost, which saves valuable time for our students. Second, having a large fleet of a specific model allows us to quickly gather data and apply fixes if needed to a large population. Lastly, it ensures consistency among students as they collaborate on projects.
Wait a minute...I saw a laptop for sale at [BigBoxStore] for dirt cheap! What gives?
The inexpensive laptops typically found in large retail outlets aren't designed to meet the demands of our students. These lower-priced laptops have one primary design goal: beating the price of the competition. The components used are the cheapest available at the time of manufacture, and minimal time is spent testing component compatibility and overall durability.
In comparison, business-class laptops have the primary design goals of durability, high performance, and ease of service. The frames are reinforced, components extensively tested in various combinations, and they undergo more rigorous quality control checks. Workstation or business-class laptops often have components that are ISV certified by software vendors like Adobe and Autodesk, guaranteeing the software is compatible with the certified laptop hardware.
Should I bring a second computer to Neumont?
Some students do choose to use a second computer (for gaming, movies, etc.) in addition to the Neumont laptop, but this is entirely up to each individual student. The Neumont laptops are designed first and foremost to meet the academic requirements of our degree programs and to perform reliably throughout a student's enrollment at Neumont. If you are looking for a reliable, all-around computer for email, word processing, web browsing, and running professional grade development tools (Visual Studio, Maya, Eclipse, etc.), the Neumont laptop is all you will need. However, the Neumont laptop is not designed to be a high-end gaming and multimedia system. If having a high-end gaming system is important to you, you should consider using an additional computer.
